I thought there would be more time.
Another visit. Another holiday. Another ordinary afternoon when everyone would be together, and we would finally remember to take a picture.
Then someone I loved passed away.
Alongside the loss came a different kind of ache: the time I had assumed was still waiting for us. The conversations I could have stayed for. The occasions I thought we could repeat. The photographs we never quite got around to taking.
It is easy to believe that the people we love will always be there for one more photo. Not because we take them lightly, but because life is full. We are working, moving, making plans, trying to get through the week. We tell ourselves we will do it when everyone is home. When there is a special occasion. When the timing is better.
Only later do we understand that an ordinary day together was already the occasion.
That feeling is where Black Mango Studio began. With the wish for a little more time—and the knowledge that no technology could give it back.
A picture cannot bring someone back.
It can give love a place to land.
I do not believe an image can undo a goodbye. It cannot recreate a voice, a familiar laugh or the feeling of being in the same room. And an imagined portrait is not a memory of something that actually happened.
But I began to wonder whether a picture could still mean something, even when the moment it shows was never possible.
Perhaps it could be a family portrait with someone who is deeply missed. A grandparent pictured alongside the family that continues to grow. Two people in the same frame when distance, timing or loss kept them apart. Something made with care, held with honesty, and understood for what it is: a way to express a bond that is still there.
For some people, that kind of image may feel comforting. For others, it may not feel right at all. Both responses deserve respect. There is no correct way to miss someone, and no picture anyone should feel pressured to make.
My hope is simply to offer a possibility. A small, personal way to say: you belong in our story.
“We cannot make more time.
We can make more room for the people who matter.”
And for the life still ahead of us.
The more I thought about the photographs we wish we had, the more I realized this project was also about the moments we are living right now.
A graduation portrait can hold much more than a cap and gown. It can hold late nights, uncertainty, help from someone who believed in us, and the quiet relief of making it through. Not everyone gets the photograph that tells that story. I want more people to have the chance.
A first professional headshot can mark the beginning of a working life, a return after time away, or the courage to start again. Sometimes a person does not need to look like someone else. They need a photograph that helps them see the person they are becoming.
A family picture can mean everyone finally fits into the frame. The person who is usually behind the camera gets to be in it, too. A holiday card becomes less about perfect clothes and more about the simple happiness of belonging to one another.
And a portrait with a dog can carry a whole world of ordinary love: the daily walks, the familiar face at the door, the companion who was there through a chapter no one else quite saw. Those relationships deserve a place in our albums as well.
These are different pictures, but the wish underneath them is often the same. Let this matter. Let me keep something of it.
A little technology.
A very human reason.
Black Mango Studio is an AI portrait studio being built around that wish. The idea is to start with photos people already have and help them create something meaningful: a family keepsake, a new professional portrait, a milestone, or a picture with someone they love.
The technology is a tool. The people in the photographs are the reason for it.
That means making room for different families, different bodies, different ages and different ways of belonging. It means treating a reference photo as a person’s trust, not just an upload. It means being clear when a picture is AI-created, and never presenting an imagined gathering as an event that really happened.
It also means keeping the experience approachable. You should not need to know how to write a prompt or arrange a studio shoot to explore a portrait that feels like you. You should be able to see a direction, understand what it offers, and decide in your own time.
This project began with a regret I could not change. What I can do is build something from it with care.
I hope that, somewhere along the way, it helps someone make a picture they will be glad to have. Something for a frame, a card, a new beginning—or simply for themselves.
And if someone you love is beside you today, take an ordinary photo together. It does not have to be perfect. It does not even have to be for this studio.
Being there together is already enough.
