What makes a good pet reference?

Get down to your pet’s eye level and use a moment when they are still. The important details are not just the eyes: ear shape, muzzle, coat markings and body outline help distinguish your companion. A very close wide-angle nose photo can be charming, but it may not be the best guide for a full portrait.

• Keep both ears and the face visible when possible.
• Use daylight without a harsh flash reflection.
• Add a body reference if distinctive markings extend beyond the face.
• Use separate participant cards for separate animals.

A portrait without losing the pet you know

Choose a quiet studio, a seasonal setting or a monochrome direction depending on how you want to display the image. Styling should support the animal’s personality. If the source has a distinctive white paw or uneven facial marking, mention that detail rather than asking for a generic perfect coat.

For a print, choose a composition with space around the ears and tail. Keep your original reference so you can compare the coat pattern at full size before ordering a frame.
