What does a remembrance portrait represent?

It represents a wish or a connection. It does not document a meeting that happened, recover a lost memory or bring someone back. A new image may feel comforting to one person and unsettling to another. Neither response needs justification.

Black Mango began after Justin Meng lost a loved one and wished for photographs never taken. That personal reason informs the studio, but it is not a promise that a portrait will change anyone’s experience of grief. Choose the references with care

Use photographs that feel familiar and that you have permission to submit. A clear image from the chapter you want to remember can be more meaningful than an aggressively restored or heavily filtered version. Keep the originals safe; they remain photographs of real moments.

• Discuss the intended portrait with other people pictured when appropriate.
• Prepare one reference per person, with supporting images on the same card.
• Do not feel required to disclose a loss or provide names.
• Review faces and proportions slowly, and set the image aside if it does not feel right.

Keep the choice personal

There is no deadline and no correct picture to make. You can explore a template without submitting a generation request. If you decide to create a portrait, choose a quiet setting and a composition that expresses the relationship rather than trying to recreate evidence of a real occasion.

When sharing with family, describe it as an imagined AI portrait. The original photographs, the new image and the memories they bring up do not have to compete with one another. Each person can choose what they want to keep.
